On June 20, 2024, Crane WASP was awarded with the Honourable Mention by ADI Design for the 28th edition of the Compasso d’Oro Award.
The machine, which had already been featured in the ADI Design Index 2022, was selected by ADI Design as one of the 39 Honourable Mentions for this edition, out of more than 300 products included in the catalogue.
Crane WASP, which was selected for the award in 2022 in the category ‘Design of materials and technological systems’, stands out as the only building systems among the selected products.
The machine, developed in 2018 and refined over the years, is a collaborative 3D printing system capable of constructing houses using locally sourced natural materials and agricultural waste, as well as standardized building materials. Crane WASP has quickly established itself as a leading product in the field of 3D printing for construction, thus becoming the first Italian architectural 3D printer marketed globally.
The awarded objects and those receiving an Honourable Mention will become part of the Compasso d'Oro Collection, which is permanently exhibited at the ADI Design Museum, something which Umberto Cabini, president of the ADI Foundation, says “is also in a constant state of evolution with each edition of the award increasing its heritage.
All the candidate products were presented to a jury made up of Maria Cristina Didero, independent author and curator, Luciano Galimberti, designer and president of ADI, the designer Francisco Gómez Paz, Renata Cristina Mazzantini, director of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome and Toshiyuki Kita, designer and Ambassador for the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka. In its report the jury underlined how "the application of advanced technologies in certain products has indicated a significant difference, capable of questioning even long-established typologies in use, together with an overall approach combined with a particular poetic maturity".
