Unique seamless workflow from intraoral scan to J5 DentaJet 3D printer unlocks all geometric and colour possibilities for dentistry

Stratasys Ltd (NASDAQ: SSYS) and 3Shape today announced a new automated workflow for 3D printing colour using 3Shape's Dental System software and the Stratasys J5 DentaJet™ 3D printer. Dental labs can capture colour and geometric data in the patient's mouth using an intraoral scanner and 3Shape software. Stratasys 3D printer users can then import the data and print highly accurate, customised full-colour tooth models.

"In dentistry, you have to pay very close attention to appearance. Especially the precise matching of tooth colour is difficult and time-consuming ", says Rune Fisker, Senior Vice President Product Strategy at 3Shape. "For the first time, we are automating the entire workflow for customers using 3Shape and the J5 DentaJet printer. Dental labs benefit from all the capabilities of the only dental printer that can create highly realistic replicas of the patient's mouth through a TRIOS scan."

With the J5 DentaJet 3D printer, dentists can scale production by printing large, mixed batches of dental parts simultaneously on the same platform - including implant models, surgical guides and gingival masks. PolyJet™ technology ensures that these printed dental applications have accurate and precise geometry. It is renowned for its full-colour printing capabilities. For example, it can be used to print full-colour dental parts from a single mould.

3Shape offers a unique new workflow that allows users to take full advantage of these joint capabilities. Dental System from 3Shape provides an industry-leading workflow and seamless connection between dental practices and dental labs. The latest version of the software (2022.1) now supports the 3MF open file format and captures geometric and colour data from intraoral scans.

"There are darker tooth stumps and transparent crowns, so colour matching with the rest of the patient's teeth is a real challenge," says Ron Ellenbogen, Director Dental Products at Stratasys. "Dental System from 3Shape now supports 3MF. As a result, our customer can take advantage of the colour capabilities of Stratasys' PolyJet 3D printers and match dentures in true colour. This new ready-to-use workflow is an important step in expanding the colour applications of the J5 DentaJet platform ."

3MF is an increasingly popular open source file format. It is published by the 3MF Consortium, of which Stratasys is a leading member. This format improves workflow by including all model information in one package, even down to voxel-level control of the model's interior and metadata. Stratasys is the only company to offer a PANTONE-validated™ full-colour multi-material 3D printer that can fully exploit the capabilities of the 3MF format.
