Today, the dream of flight revolves around producing aircraft components using industrial 3D printing technology. Every company aims to open up opportunities to differentiate themselves in the marketplace – in terms of new customer benefits, potential cost savings and sustainability targets. Thanks to EOS additive manufacturing technology, Liebherr is getting closer to achieving this goal. The realization of a high-pressure hydraulic valve block using EOS metal 3D printing technology marks an important milestone. This valve block has now been successfully tested on a flight with an Airbus A380 aircraft.

A350 XWB cable routing – from design to component in two weeks

The moment when a completely new commercial aircraft takes to the skies for the first time is always special – and this was especially true of the Airbus A350 XWB. As a child of the new millennium, it was clear from the very beginning that development work would focus on innovative materials and production processes – the goal was no less than to build the world's most efficient aircraft. As a technology of the future, additive manufacturing was another possibility that needed to be considered during development. As part of a pilot project, experts from Sogeti High Tech succeeded in developing a cable mount on the front spar of the vertical stabilizer for the passenger aircraft in record time, taking only two weeks from the initial sketch to the finished part. EOS technology and expertise was a pivotal aspect of this development process.

Royal DSM, a global science-based company in Nutrition, Health and Sustainable Living today announced its new carbon fiber filled grade PA6/66 filament Novamid® ID1030 CF10 for 3D printing. Despite the low carbon fiber loading of 10% - much lower than other carbon filled materials - it produces functional prototyping and industrial parts with properties close to what is usually achievable only by injection molding while matching the easy and fast printing of unreinforced plastics.
